Rhododendron (PJM Group)

Rhododendron (PJM Group) is a sturdy, evergreen species that produces clusters of pink, lavender, or white flowers in the early spring. With attractive glossy foliage, this small to medium sized shrub is quite hardy and easy to care for. It prefers moist, acidic soils, and can be grown in partial to full shade or even full sun provided the soil is kept moist. Rhododendron (PJM Group) is well-suited for hedges, woodland gardens, and will even bring bright color to shady areas. This is a perfect choice for gardeners looking to brighten up their space with minimal effort.

watering

Rhododendrons require regular watering, approximately once or twice weekly, depending on the temperature and the season. In the spring and summer, they should be watered deeply to ensure that the entire root system receives water. During the hot months, they should be watered twice a week, as the soil tends to dry out quickly. In the winter months, water should be reduced, and only applied when the soil starts to dry out. Overwatering can lead to root and stem rot.

sunlight

Rhododendron (PJM Group) plants prefer bright, indirect light and should be grown in conditions that provide at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight each day. Direct sun exposure can be harmful; therefore it’s best to place the plants in areas with light filtered through a light curtain or a window blind. During the summer, Rhododendron plants should be shaded from the intense afternoon sunlight by placing the plants in a sheltered spot outside or by providing indirect light indoors. In the winter, the amount of sunlight should be reduced to just 3 hours per day so that the plants can conserve energy reserves for spring and summer blooming.

pruning

Pruning of Rhododendron (PJM Group) can be done in late winter to early spring; usually February to early April, right before growth begins. To prune rhododendron, start by removing dead or damaged branches and crossing branches first. Then remove any branches growing in the wrong direction and weak or thin branches. Pruning rhododendrons can be done to maintain their desired size, shape and overall structure or to promote more blooming. A light pruning can help open up the centre and add new growth. When pruning, make sure to never prune more than half the plant and use sharp, clean pruners.
