Spiraea nipponica 'Snowmound'

Spirea (Spiraea nipponica 'Snowmound') is a garden shrub, with a neat mounding habit that reaches 50-60cm high and spreads to up to 60-90cm wide. In summer it is adorned with flat clusters of white flowers, but its main attraction lies in its lovely, loosely spreading branches, densely clad in small, oval-shaped leaves that are bright green in spring and summer, and turn yellow-orange in autumn. This robust shrub is heat and drought tolerant, and prefers a sunny or partly shaded location in fertile soil. Resistant to rabbits and deer, it's an excellent choice for hedging and foundation plantings, long-lived and providing year-round colour and interest.

watering

For best results, Spirea (Spiraea nipponica 'Snowmound') will need to be watered at least once per week. A good approach is to check the soil by sticking your finger into the soil about an inch deep. If the soil feels dry, it's time to water. Avoid watering in excess, as overly wet conditions can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb is to water until the soil is evenly moist, but not soggy. Additionally, drip irrigation is a great way to ensure that your spirea is getting an even amount of water each week.

sunlight

Spirea (Spiraea nipponica 'Snowmound') requires full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours each day for best growth. As long as the area receives enough sunlight, the plant should grow and bloom successfully. Spirea is an adaptable plant, so it will also tolerate light to partial shade, but may not bloom as heavily without the full sun.

pruning

Spirea (Spiraea nipponica 'Snowmound') should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring (February to April) to shape and thin growth. Removal of up to 30 percent of the oldest branches is recommended. Dead and broken branches should be removed throughout the season as needed.
