Chinese photinia are vigorous growers and should be pruned in early spring to encourage thick, healthy growth. After the initial pruning, they should be shaped and pruned a few times during the growing season, usually in March, May, and July. Before pruning, it is important to remove any dead or diseased branches. For heavy pruning, up to 1-third of the growth can be removed. For gentle pruning of Chinese photinia, use hand pruners to remove a few inches of new growth at a time. This will help maintain the shape and size of the plant.
