Cypress is an evergreen tree that prefers moist soil and regular watering. This species needs plenty of water in the summer months, however, during the cooler months the plant only needs occasional, light watering. During warm summer weather, water your cypress every 7-10 days or when the top 2-3 inches of the soil are dry. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering, which can kill the plant. In winter months, water only when the top 5-6 inches of soil are dry.

This plant also does well in part shade, where it receives most of its sun in the morning and some shade in the afternoon. It should be protected from midday sun in extremely hot and sunny climates. This plant should not be exposed to temperatures lower than 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius).

Dead or damaged branches should be removed immediately, taking care not to drastically remove foliage from the top of the plant as too much foliage removal can weaken the tree. Any selective pruning should aim to maintain the form and structure of the tree. Pruning sharp angles or removing too many interior branches from the tree should be avoided.
