watering

In general, the Showy Locoweed should be watered around twice a week. This means you should water the plant thoroughly, making sure that the water reaches the entirety of the roots. The frequency of watering will depend on how hot and dry the conditions in your greenhouse (or wherever you are growing the Locoweed) are; in very hot climates, it may be necessary to water twice a day in order to keep the soil consistently moist. In any case, do not allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Additionally, you should water the plant at the base instead of over the entire foliage, as this will help to prevent fresh growth from being too moist and prone to diseases or pests.

sunlight

Showy locoweed prefers full sunlight in order to thrive. The plant should receive 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. For best results, place the plant in an area that gets sun early in the morning and late in the afternoon, as the intense midday sun is not ideal for these plants. To maximize growth and blooming, provide at least 8 hours of direct light each day.

pruning

Showy Locoweed should be pruned late in the season, once the flowers have faded and are no longer producing color. This species can be lightly pruned for dead wood or die-back. Pruning should be light and should not remove more than about 1/3 of the stems growing each season. Any wayward or overgrown stems should be pruned back as needed to ensure the plant remains contained and open. This pruning should be done no later than mid to late autumn to avoid excessive stress on the plant. During the summer months Curative pruning should be done in order to encourage new growth and blooming. This should be done regularly, preferably each month. Heavy pruning is not recommended for this species.
