Watershield

Brasenia schreberi

Also Known As - Purple Wen Dock
Watershield (Brasenia schreberi) is a perennial aquatic plant known for its distinctive, lily pad-like leaves which are olive-green in color. The floating leaves are almost circular with a waxy coating, giving them the appearance of a water shield, thus the species name. Its deep-red, star-shaped flowers are the only above-water surface the species showcases. These flowers are dioecious, meaning they are either male or female flowers, and blooms from June to September. They are often found in ponds, drainages and lake edges. It is an excellent shelter for fish fry, amphibians and reptiles. Additionally, its wide distribution warrants protection of Waterhshield and its natural habitat.

watering

Watershield should be watered consistently once or twice a week, depending on local temperatures and a plant's location. During warmer months, when the temperature stays between 65 and 75 degrees F, it’s important to pay closer attention to the moisture content of the soil and water the plant more frequently if needed. The plant does not tolerate drought, so water generously, but avoid overwatering as the crown or root can rot. Best to check the plant’s soil often and water when the top 1-2 inches is dry.

sunlight

The amount and timing of sunlight required for plant species of Watershield (Brasenia schreberi) is typically between 2 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Depending on the location, they may need more or less. They thrive best in areas that experience full sun in the early mornings and afternoon with partial shade in the hottest parts of the day. If exposed to too much direct sunlight, the watershield may experience sunburn and wilting. These plants generally prefer partial shade to full sun conditions. It is important to note that this plant thrives in water and requires regular water and fertilizer to keep it healthy.

pruning

When pruning Watershield plants, it is important to do so at the right time to ensure optimal growth. While pruning can be done in early spring, late fall is the recommended time for Watershields. It is also important to keep in mind that Watershields are marginal aquatic plants. As such, they do not need to be pruned as frequently as other plants. When pruning is necessary, it is important to only remove the dead and damaged leaves as these will not contribute to the growth of the plant. Prune only as much as needed to remove the dead leaves and ensure a neat and healthier looking plant. Where possible, it is best to leave as many of the healthy foliage as possible on the plant. Overall, prune Watershield plants in late fall and remove only the dead and damaged foliage. Prune only as much as necessary to ensure a healthy and attractive appearance.
