Kashmir cypress

Cupressus cashmeriana

Kashmir cypress is an amazing evergreen conifer from the Himalayas. Its extremely limited natural range makes it a rare and prized specimen in gardens and landscapes around the world. In its native habitats, it grows to approximately 40 feet, with finely textured, dense foliage and corky bark. Its unique structure and compact form make it an ideal choice for foundation plantings, screen walls, and even bonsai. When established, Kashmir cypress is both wind and drought-tolerant, requiring minimal supplemental water and minimal pruning. Furthermore, its slow to moderate growth rate can provide consistent color for many years. Kashmir cypress is an excellent choice for most landscapes - making it a true gem.

watering

Kashmir cypress should be watered thoroughly once per week. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. In hotter climates, the plants may need more frequent watering as temperatures rise, but make sure the soil is still allowed to dry out between waterings. When watering, ensure that the soil is saturated and that the water reaches the entire root system. Kashmir cypress should not be overwatered as this can lead to root rot.

sunlight

Kashmir cypress needs plenty of light to thrive, and direct sunlight is best. During the summer, the plant should be positioned in an area that receives at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. In the winter, the plant should be in an area that receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. They do best with bright, indirect light for the rest of the day, but can also tolerate low-light conditions.

pruning

Kashmir cypress should be pruned in the spring or winter while the plant is dormant. The amount of pruning you do depends on the size and shape you would like your Kashmir cypress to be. As a general rule, prune no more than 1/3 of the tree's canopy. This will ensure that the tree stays strong and healthy. To encourage the growth of healthy, new branches, make sure to prune only the dead or diseased branches. Make sure to leave well-spaced, strong branches to provide natural support to the tree.
