Chinese juniper

Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose'

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose') is an evergreen coniferous shrub, native to parts of China and Japan. It tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, from moderate temperatures and high altitudes to poorly drained soils and heavy shade. Its bright green foliage provides an excellent backdrop for the showy orange-brown berries which are a favorite among birds. The slow-growing shrub works great as a privacy hedge or for topiary gardens. With proper care and pruning, 'San Jose' Chinese juniper can reach up to 8 feet in height and 6 feet in width, making it a great addition to many landscapes.

watering

Water Chinese junipers every 7-10 days, depending on the temperature and soil moisture. Junipers prefer slightly dry soil, so water only when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. If the weather is hot and dry, they should be watered more frequently. During the winter, Chinese junipers should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings to discourage root rot. Never overwater junipers as they are very prone to root rot and other fungal diseases.

sunlight

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose') should be grown in an area with full sun to part shade. The more sun that this shrub receives, the more vibrant and lush its appearance will be. Depending on the region, it is best to provide the plant with 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day during the growing season and a little more during the winter months. Shade may be needed during the hottest parts of the day or in climates with extremely hot summers.

pruning

The Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose') should be pruned during the dormant season (late winter or early spring). This species is tolerant of more intense pruning, so it can be lightly pruned once a year in late spring and then more heavily pruned in late winter or early spring. It is important not to over prune Chinese juniper as this can adversely affect its growth. To prevent over pruning, the tips of the branches should be cut back, leaving 2 or 3 sets of needles. This will allow new growth to emerge and create a more balanced, attractive shape.
