Chinese juniper

Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan'

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan') is the tough, reliable evergreen that will add structure year round to your garden. They are attractive and dense growing with a pyramidal, columnar form with sharply pointed foliage. The foliage of Chinese juniper is one to two inches long and blue-green in colour. This juniper is very strong and is tolerant to drought, pollution, wind, and sun. It is also relatively deer resistant. Plant in well-draining soil in an area receiving full to partial sun. It is a low-maintenance species that is great for adding structure to landscapes and borders.

watering

Chinese juniper should be watered about once a week during the active growing season, from spring to fall. Water the plant until the top inch or so of soil feels moist to the touch, but be careful not to over-water. During cooler weather, the frequency of watering can be reduced to once every 2 weeks or even less. In winter give the plant only enough water to keep the soil from drying out completely, as too much moisture can lead to root rot.

sunlight

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan') does best in full sun or partial shade, meaning at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. For best growth, it is best to plant this Chinese juniper in an area that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. During the hottest months of the year, it may need a bit more shade to protect it from the intense afternoon heat.

pruning

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan') should be pruned twice a year. Pruning in late spring (April - June) and again in the fall (September - November) is best. Prune just after the Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan') starts active growth for the season. Removing dead and diseased wood and any unruly branches should be done as necessary. Pruning to shape the plant can also be done at these times. Pruning should only remove no more than 1-third of the existing growth each time. This will reduce stress on the plant and allow it to heal properly after pruning.
