watering
Sponge gourd plants need regular, consistent watering in order to thrive. During the first year of growth, water them 2 to 3 times per week, using enough water to thoroughly moisten the soil to a depth of 8-12 inches. As the plants mature, reduce the frequency of watering to once or twice per week, ensuring the soil remains moist to a depth of 8 inches. Sponge gourd plants also need supplemental water during times of prolonged hot or dry weather.
sunlight
Sponge gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca) is a tropical plant that loves direct sunshine, but it does not need to be exposed to full, hot sunshine for extended periods of time. Like most tropical plants, Luffa aegyptiaca needs around 6-8 hours of daily, direct sunlight. The morning sunlight is especially beneficial for sponge gourd, lighting up the gorgeous yellow flowers that often bloom on the plant. Too much direct sunlight can cause the plant to burn, and the leaves may start to look dry and dull.
pruning
Sponge gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca) should be pruned once or twice a year when the plant is actively growing. Pruning should be done to maintain a manageable size and shape. During pruning, remove any weak or twiggy growth, dried and yellowed leafs, and any dead flower clusters. It’s always best to use sharp and sterilized tools for pruning and make sure they are kept clean and dry between uses. Prune back up to a third of the overall plant, or only remove the damaged or weak parts of the plant. This process can be done through the active growing season, from late spring to mid-autumn.
