Magnolia tripetala

The umbrella tree, or Magnolia tripetala, is a deciduous tree with large, fragrant flowers from which it gets its common name. Its large, showy, white blooms are composed of numerous petals and grow in an umbrella-shape above bright green foliage. During autumn, its leaves develop tints of yellow and red. This tree can grow up to 40 feet tall, and can easily spread 20 feet wide. It is drought-tolerant and adds beauty to any landscape.

watering

Water newly planted umbrella tree immediately after planting. Even in colder climates, water should be applied during dry spells to keep the soil moist. For established trees, water the soil at the base of the tree once a week during the summer and once a month during the winter, if no rain or snow falls. Apply water slowly to allow it to soak into the soil and reach the roots. It should take about 20 minutes to apply 10 gallons (38 liters) of water. Water the plant deeply so that it receives 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of water. During hot and dry summers, additional water may be needed.

sunlight

Umbrella tree prefers direct sunlight for at least 5-6 hours a day. During the spring and summer months, they thrive in full sun and partial shade. During the fall and winter seasons, they prefer more shade and minimal direct sunlight. The umbrella tree prefers indirect light, adequate humidity, and temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. When possible, it is best to provide them with an area that allows the sunlight to filter in from the south or western exposure. This will help the umbrella tree to get the right amount of sun and keep away from extreme environmental factors.

pruning

Umbrella trees should be pruned at least once a year to maintain the desired shape, size, and structure. Pruning should take place in late winter or early spring (February to April). It is best to prune recently-developed growth, such as branches that are longer than desired and crossing branches that can interfere with air circulation or light penetration. You should also remove weak or thin growth, dead or diseased material, and any structural flaws that you may notice. When pruning, ensure that cuts are made cleanly and close to the branch’s attachment point. Pruning can also be used to stimulate further flowering and aid in creating a denser canopy. Care should be taken to not over-prune, as this may cause stress and damage to the tree.
