black spruce

Picea mariana 'Nana'

Black spruce (Picea mariana 'Nana') is a narrow evergreen native to cooler northern climates. Its attractive pendulous branches bear dark-green needles with silvery-white undersides, giving it a unique two-toned look. Growing up to 8m high and 5m wide, it is a slow grower with a dense, compact form. This hardy conifer is also tolerant to a wide range of soil ranging from wet to dry, acidic to basic. It is often used as an effective windbreak or ornamental in gardens or parks. When trained and pruned, its branches make an interesting feature or bonsai.

watering

Black Spruce 'Nana' plants should be watered deeply about once per week, or when the soil appears dry. Make sure to test the soil at least 1 to 2 inches below the surface before watering. Be sure to not saturate the soil and avoid heavy amounts of water, especially during periods of extreme heat. If the spruce is located in a pot, make sure to switch from a standard potting soil mixture to 1 that is specifically formulated for container plants and water more frequently. Additionally, you can supplement the water with occasional misting and/or a little foliage feeding.

sunlight

Black spruce (Picea mariana 'Nana') grows best with full sunlight and prefers at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. This plant species is also able to withstand partial shade, but should never be grown in complete darkness. It is important that the sun is not too intense; Black spruce should not be exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. The ideal time for sunlight exposure is between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when the sun is not at its hottest.

pruning

Black spruce (Picea mariana 'Nana') should be pruned in late winter or early spring. This should be done lightly, removing only a few old or weak branches at a time. If it needs more severe pruning, it should be done in early summer, when the new growth has already started. Pruning should be kept to a minimum to avoid stressing the plant. When done correctly, pruning will help promote the health of the Black spruce and keep it looking tidy.
