Korean azalea

Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense

Korean azalea, Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense, is an evergreen shrub native to the mountains of Korea and China. It is a low-growing species, reaching a mature height of only three feet. The glossy, tightly-packed leaves are deep green in the shade and turn purple in sunnier exposures. You will be enthralled by the fragrant cluster of small, funnel-shaped, pink or white flowers that appear in May through June. This versatile and easy-care shrub is an excellent choice for rock or woodland gardens and other landscaping projects.

watering

Korean azalea (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense) should be watered once a week, using around 1-2 inches of water. During the summer months, you should water more often, providing 1-2 inches of water twice a week. During the fall and spring, water once a week, but during the winter, water only occasionally, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. When watering, make sure to apply the water evenly and carefully to avoid overwatering or flood-type conditions. When it is hot outside, water in the morning or late evening.

sunlight

Korean azaleas (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense) require 4-5 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. In areas where summers are warm, these plants should be placed in part shade to prevent leaf scorching. During the spring and summer months plants should receive full sun in the morning and partial shade in the afternoon. During the winter months these plants should be placed in a sheltered area to protect them from cold temperatures. It is best to avoid midday sun during the summer months as it can be too intense and lead to leaf scorching.

pruning

Korean azalea (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense) should be pruned in winter once every 2 years. In the spring the shrub will send out shoots and so pruning during the winter months allows the plant time to settle and prepare for the new growth season. During the winter pruning, the shrub should be cut back to a minimum of 2 thirds of the previous season’s growth. Although pruning in late autumn is beneficial, pruning in the late spring or summer can weaken the shrub and reduce the flowering display in the following year.
