jack tree

Sinojackia xylocarpa

The jack tree (Sinojackia xylocarpa) is a deciduous tree native to China. It has a broad crown, with dark green, drooping leaves. The leaves are oval or heart-shaped and can be up to 8 cm long. The tree produces dark green flowers that turn into yellowish-green fruits in the shape of small cups. The fruits are edible and are used in Chinese cuisine. It is also known for its medicinal properties. Its branches have been used to treat coughs, skin ailments and dysentery. The wood is strong and durable, so it is often used for furniture and crafts.

watering

Jack tree requires moderate to regular watering in the growing season from spring to fall. During the warmer months, allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. In the winter months, water only once or twice a month or when soil is completely dry with about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water each time. Overwatering can cause yellowing leaves, so water only when necessary.

sunlight

Jack trees (Sinojackia xylocarpa) prefer to be grown in a sunny, draughty spot. They need at least 4-5 hours of full sun a day during the growing season and should be protected from strong winds in winter. During summer, jack trees should be given additional sun to help stimulate flowering. In winter, when the plant is dormant, it needs far less sunlight and can tolerate 1-2 hours of sun each day without distress.

pruning

Jack Trees should be pruned twice a year. In early spring (March-April) they should be pruned to thin out inner branches and reshape the crown. This can be done by cutting back any long shoots by 2-thirds and removing any weak and dead wood. In late summer (August-September), prune any spring growth by 1-third in order to encourage dense, tight growth. After pruning, fertilize the tree with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or organic matter like compost.
