bald cypress

Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret'

The bald cypress (Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret') is a slender, pyramidal deciduous conifer which is native to North America. It is a slow-growing tree, reaching heights of up to 70 feet at maturity with a spread of 25 feet. Its needles are feathery and light green in colour and turn yellow to orange in autumn. It is also very tolerant of wet soils and is commonly used in swampy areas for stabilizing banks and mitigating flood control. In addition to its ornamental appeal, this tree is usually seen with 'knees' around its base from roots that surface above ground. The bark is reddish-brown and scaly with finely divided upright branches which gives it a somewhat unique visual appeal.

watering

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret') should be watered regularly throughout the growing season at least once a week. During the summer months, the frequency of watering may need to be increased to twice a week if conditions are very hot and dry. Check the soil moisture before watering; soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Always water the cypress deeply, soaking the soil to a depth of at least 8 inches. During the dormant season, providing supplemental water is not usually necessary unless the soil is very dry. In this case, water every 2 to 4 weeks.

sunlight

The bald cypress (Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret') requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and health. It should receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day, ideally in the morning or late afternoon. When grown in shade, it will struggle to reach its full potential. In areas with strong summer sunshine, some shade during the hottest part of the day may be beneficial.

pruning

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret') should be pruned during their regular spring maintenance. Pruning should not be done in the fall as new growth is encouraged, or during the summer growing season. Pruning is primarily reserved for shaping and removing dead or diseased limbs, as well as crossing limbs. Pruning should be done lightly and judiciously to maintain the tree’s natural form. Depending on the size of the tree, cutting back should be limited to no more than 1 fourth of the total live branch growth. During pruning, avoid cutting too deeply into the main trunk as this could damage or stunt the growth of the tree.
