Tetracentron sinense

Spur leaf (Tetracentron sinense) is a deciduous tree native to China, reaching up to 15m tall. It has a smooth, greyish-brown bark and yellow-green foliage consisting of oval leaves with smooth margins and serrated, feathery leaflets. The small yellowish flowers appear in dangling racemes. The flowers develop into three-sided, star-shaped fruits with persistent calyx lobes. The wood of spur leaf has a very attractive prominent grain pattern making it desirable in traditional woodworking. Although easy to grow, Spur Leaves require fertile, humus-rich, moist yet well-drained soils in full sunlight or partial shade.

watering

Tetracentron sinense, also known as spur leaf, is a deciduous tree native to southern China. During its active growth season, from spring to summer, this plant species should be watered twice a week. Each time, provide enough water to moisten the top 25mm (1 inch) of soil. It's important to water gently and avoid overwatering so that the soil doesn't become soggy. In winter, reduce the amount of water as the plant is dormant. Water only when the top 75mm (3 inch) of soil begins to dry out.

sunlight

Spur Leaf (Tetracentron sinense) plants prefer indirect sunlight, particularly during periods of high heat. During the summer, they should be exposed to bright, indirect light for 4 to 5 hours each day. In the spring and fall, they will benefit from 6 to 8 hours of indirect sunlight per day. During the winter months, they should be moved to a warm, bright location, such as a southern-facing window. In general, Spur Leaf plants thrive best in low to moderate light conditions.

pruning

For correct pruning of a Spur Leaf (Tetracentron sinense) plant, it is best to prune in late winter, after the plant has gone dormant. Pruning at this time of year will encourage new growth and ensure the plant stays healthy. Prune no more than 25 to 30 percent of the plant material, and cut the plant back to its desired shape and size. It is also important to sterilize cutting tools before and after each use to prevent the spread of disease.
