Indian jujube

Ziziphus jujuba

Indian jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is a small deciduous tree native to India and southern Asia. It can grow up to 15 meters in height and produces edible fruits. Its leaves are round and generally glossy, while its flowers tend to be greenish yellow. The fruit, which is 1 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, has a brownish or reddish skin and a pale yellow flesh. It is sweet and often consumed fresh or dried. Jujubes are high in vitamins A, B, and C, making them a nutrient-packed addition to many diets. Furthermore, these fruits are known for their medicinal properties and are used to treat digestive issues, skin conditions, and even insomnia.

watering

Watering Indian jujube plants should be done regularly to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. This species is very drought tolerant, so it should only be watered when the soil is dry to the touch. Depending on the weather, this could be roughly every 10 days or so in the summer and every 2-3 weeks during the winter. When watering, water deeply, saturating the soil to a depth of at least 12 inches. Over-watering can be just as damaging as under-watering, so it's important to only water when the soil is dry.

sunlight

Indian jujube plants do best in full sunlight and require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. They can tolerate light shade but thrive in hot, dry conditions. If you are growing Indian jujube in a cool climate, try placing the plant in a south-facing area to maximize the amount of light it receives.

pruning

Pruning Indian jujubes should be done yearly in early spring. You should remove any branches that are dead, damaged, or diseased, as well as any that are crossing each other or rubbing together. You should also thin out the canopy to allow light and air circulation. For more drastic pruning, you can prune the tree back to around 6 feet in late winter. This will encourage a denser canopy with more fruit-bearing branches. Pruning Indian jujubes periodically helps to encourage healthy growth and production.
